After You, Betobetosan, A Trick-Taking Game of Creeping Dread for 4 Players Every night, on quiet streets lit only by flickering lanterns, something follows. You hear it—step, step… step, step…—always just behind you, never in sight. It is Betobetosan, a yokai known in Japanese folklore for silently trailing behind night-time travelers with soft, sticky footsteps. In After You, Betobetosan, you and your friends play as children walking home late at night, trying not to panic as Betobetosan draws closer. One player becomes the unsettling yokai, using limited information and shifting suits to win tricks and spread fear. The other players—Children—must stay one step ahead, using clever cardplay, illuminated safe zones, and their one precious "After You, Betobeto-san" card to avoid gaining Fear tokens. But be careful. If you match Betobetosan’s move exactly, you don’t just lose the trick—you’ve locked eyes with the yokai. And once you do, fear creeps in faster than footsteps in the dark.
